The high school season is two weeks old and we are getting ready for our first
competition this Thursday at Riceville. Our first two weeks of practice have gone very well,
the guys are working hard and I think a lot of people are going to be pleasantly surprised at
how far many of the wrestlers have come in a year. Even though we don’t have a lot of
wrestlers out, we will have almost every weight filled. Even though practices have been
going well, I think the guys are ready to start competing against someone other than their
teammates!
I want to extend a big thank you to everyone that helped make the Black Friday Sailor
Classic a great success last Friday. We had 193 wrestlers competing and everything went very
smoothly. It’s nice to know that when you need help, people will always step up and I’ve found
that to be true about the Columbus wrestling program from top to bottom! I would like to
especially thank Curt Hildebrand, Denny Boleyn, Tim Klein, and Aaron McClelland for all of
their hard work preparing for the tournament and getting everything organized. Our program
would not be what it is today without people unselfishly giving back to the program. I look
forward to watching the club duals we have coming up and the home middle school dual on
Monday at Columbus High School. Hopefully we can get as many people as possible to cheer on
our future Sailors! I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! Until next week……..

Heading in the right direction
As I get ready for the beginning of my 6th year as the head wrestling coach at
Columbus High School, I can't help but think back on all the positive things that have
happened in our program during that time. We have started the Sailor Mat Club that has
continued to grow every year. We have fantastic coaches and parents willing to support
their sons as they learn the sport of wrestling. This year we our combining our middle
school wrestling programs into the Cedar Valley Catholic School Sailors. I truly believe
this will make our wrestling program stronger because it will allow us to centralize
resources, teach more advanced technique, and provide a more rigorous practice
environment. At the high school level we return a lot of experience from last year's team.
We are no longer combining with NU High and will be in Class 1A this year. For the
first time in as long as anyone can remember, we will be hosting a Sectional tournament
at Columbus High in February. This is the first step on the way to the state wrestling
tournament. We look forward for another great year of Sailor wrestling at every level of
our program. Continue to check back to this blog for updates throughout the season. Go
